Low Carb Sloppy Joe’s & Coleslaw


Sloppy Joe’s are a family favourite and a quick weeknight meal for a busy lifestyle. We made this low carb version at home recently and omitted a ton of sugar by using Buster Rhino’s No Sugar Added Ketchup and BBQ Sauce. It was super easy and had tons of flavour! We served it with our staple coleslaw with a creamy yet tangy dressing. 

Serves 4

454 g  (1lb) ground beef
150 g  (1 medium) onion, diced
150 g  (2-3 stalks) celery, diced
250 ml (1 cup) tomato sauce, low salt
80 ml (⅓ cup) Buster Rhino’s No Sugar Added Ketchup
80 ml (⅓ cup) Buster Rhino’s No Sugar Added Mild BBQ Sauce
15 ml (1 tbsp) Worcestershire sauce
15 ml (1 tbsp) vinegar (white, wine or apple cider) 
5 ml (1 tsp) dry mustard
10 g (1 tbsp) Salt to taste
5 g (1 tsp) Pepper to taste



1) In a large skillet, brown ground beef, celery and onion
2) Stir in remaining ingredients, simmer covered, 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally
3) If Joes appear too 'wet', leave the cover off and reduce to the desired consistency
4) Serve with your favourite low carb bun and coleslaw


 Creamy and Tangy Coleslaw

Serves 4

2 cups shredded cabbage
1 medium carrot, peeled into ribbons
2-3 tbsp mayonnaise 
2-3 tbsp vinegar (white, wine or apple cider)
1 tsp lemon juice (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste


1) Mix all ingredients in a bowl
2) Season and scale dressing to taste


Full disclosure, we don’t really measure the dressing ingredients (shhhhhh …) so the instructions are just a guide. You can’t go wrong with equal parts mayo and vinegar and then season the way you like - a dash of S&P, some lemon and maybe some garlic powder. Some of us also like chopped green onion … but we were vetoed this time around.
